About makepiece

Makepiece was founded in 2004 by Nicola Sherlock and Beate Kubitz. Nicola is Principle Designer, she is a graduate of Nottingham Trent University with a BA Hons in Fashion Knitwear Design. Beate is the Director of Business, she also keeps a small flock of sheep and goats for fibre production.

Makepiece produces 2 collections per year, as well as exclusive one off designs for our discerning customers.

Makepiece is based in the Pennine town of Todmorden, surrounded by bleak and beautiful landscapes made famous by the Brontes in novels such as Wuthering Heights. The area has been a farming and textile area from earliest times.

We work to protect the environment and human rights. Our garments are knitted in low impact sustainable fibre and we offer undyed and natural dye options. We are committed to becoming carbon neutral and produce very little waste. All design and manufacture takes place in the UK. We work with local knitters and a lace manufacturer with whom we have an established relationship. Most garments are fully fashioned.

We use the cream of fibre produced in the UK through our association with Prestige Fibres. This includes superfine kid mohair, alpaca, Blue-faced Leicester and Shetland wool. Our wool is accredited by the British Wool Marketing Board. We also use our own mohair and rare breed wool.
