edgeway
Edgeways are routes along ridges in the landscape, the natural pathways of the packhorses which carried wool and textiles across the rough hills of the Pennines to the famous cloth halls in towns. The Pennines are criss-crossed with tiny, almost invisible tracks which connected isolated farms and hamlets with trade routes over a hundred years ago. Sometimes we find stone slabs laid to help the horses cross peaty ground, and relics still persist in place names such as Edgeway, Holloway, Saltway and Limers Way.
